Pruners and tree surgeons such as Sams, advise that it is wise to start tree trimming (pruning) when the trees are young. It helps to assure the trees grow tall and straight.  It also will assure you having a full healthy shade tree as it matures which can survive wind and ice not to mention that a healthy tree is easier to maintain.

It is important as a pruner to know when to prune and how to prune since every prune is also an injury to the tree and you want to give the tree the best chance to close those wounds easily. So it is suggested you contact a qualified arborist such as Sam¹s that can give you the right advise. In most cases, if you want to experience lots of new growth in the coming spring, it can make sense to prune during dormancy.  It is suggested that you wait until just after the coldest part of the winter.  Some trees, such as maple, walnuts, and birches may drain when the sap begins to flow but this isn't harmful and should stop when the tree begins to show leaves. You can also control growth if that is your desire by tree trimming just after the conclusion of the normal growth season. It is also recommended to trim out defective limbs or limbs that just hang down too far.

We suggest as a tree surgeon to leave the trees alone in the spring and also in the fall because of active decay fungi and the slower healing that seems to occur during those times of year. If a tree appears to have been damaged say by a storm, prune any broken branches, repair torn bark or rough edges around wounds, and let the tree begin to heal. But don¹t be in a hurry to cut something down, especially if the tree is important to the property. Be patient and see if it can recover on its own. But then if there are obvious signs such as disease, a trunk is split or half of the tree is gone then chances are you should have it removed.

Transplanting

When transplanting Sams recommends giving the tree time to build its new root system. So it is highly suggested to not prune immediately till it has a solid foundation - any good tree surgeon will say the same thing.  Only remove what is possibly damaged or dead initially. Then, after the first year, you can begin to prune. This will allow the tree to get well established and help you avoid corrective measures later.

Stump Removal

There are two parts to tree removal:  the removal of the tree itself and then stump removal.

A good tree surgeon, determines if there is a clear direction for the tree to fall without damaging other trees or some other structure.  Then the tree can be expertly cut to fall within a specific direction. In some cases, the tree has to be cut and dropped in a specific location.  It is suggested that with each of these alternatives that they¹re handled by tree surgeons such as Sams since you don¹t want to have further complications.

Once the tree is down, what about the stump?

There are several alternative methods used by a stump remover:

  • Mechanical routing - quickest method
  • Chemical decomposition - slow and natural
  • Machine Digging - with a good backhoe very effective

The method chosen for stump removal will depend on the use of the area, and the time frame desired. Mechanical stump routing is fast and efficient, and may be well worth the cost. If the slower approach is acceptable, consider simply adding some fertilizer, then burying the stump in soil or mulch, and letting Nature do the job.
